This weekend (May 6th-7th) the Illawarra Plastic Modellers’ Association (IPMA) will be hosting their annual NSW Scale Model show at the Illawarra Sports Stadium, Hooka Creek Road, Berkeley.
The event is open to the public from 9am to 4pm on both days and there’s an ample supply of free parking. Admission only costs $4.00 for each adult, children under 15 years can attend for free and families (2 Adults) can come on down for just $5.00.
Formed in 1983 by a small group of enthusiastic modellers wanting a place to collectively enjoy and discuss the craft of plastic scale modelling, the IPMA is a group whose interests cover a wide range of interests within the modelling spectrum. Accepting members from all age groups and skill levels from all around the state, the group is committed spreading their love of the hobby to anyone willing to listen and participate. In addition to meeting on a regular basis, the club have also committed themselves to holding the aforementioned Scale Model show each year which offers heaps of great sights to anyone keen on the hobby.
There is a wide range of competitions on offer, including highly focused efforts like the Airfix Cup and Panzer Tracks Trophy – to more open affairs with less strict component and scale requirements. There are over forty different categories competitors can enter covering different historical eras, subjects and scales, from stand alone single tanks or other vehicles to vignettes and dioramas. It’s not all tanks and classic cars though, those of us with more of an eye for Fantasy and Science Fiction will be pleased to see options for entries in those fields too – including a dedicated Star Wars category!
Fostering talent in the younger members of our community is a big part of helping this hobby grow and the IPMA are really on board with this initiative. With a great bunch of nice, simple Junior categories with relaxed entry conditions for modellers aged 13 – 16 to give the younger minds a go. Entries are also open to younger modellers with no formal entry conditions – just paint something cool and put it out there! These little competitions are a really awesome idea and it’s always great to see more new blood engaging with this wonderful hobby of ours.
Models entered in the competition will be judged by the IPMA judging team and will be competing for the usual trophies and ribbons. Competition entry fees, categories, terms and conditions can be found on the IPMA website. All models that are being entered in the competition should be entered between 9.00am and 4.00pm Saturday May 6th and remain on display Sunday until award ceremony has ended, around 3.30pm.
A $3.00 fee per model applies for up to 10 models (Max $30). All subsequent models are free.
You can also email the entry form so we can pre-register your model prior to the event. Emailing the form implies acceptance of the terms and conditions and the normal entry fees still apply. You can send entries via the downloadable forms on the website to this e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
Even if you’re not interested in placing a formal entry, modellers are still encouraged to display their models on provided tables at the event free of charge.
Beyond the competitions themselves, there will also be a wide range of models on display from various modelling clubs alongside promising demonstrations and other exhibits. A swap and sell table will be on offer for all of your unwanted kits, decals, resin, military and modelling books, offering a great way to offload some excess models (let’s face it, we all have a bit of that!). Items can be purchased here as well and it’s often a great way to get some cool stuff at bargain prices.
If you’re more keen on grabbing newer stuff, there will also be a great range of traders selling their wares – including yours truly. We’re running a pick up promotion for locals attending the event who are keen on saving a few bucks. The deal provides 10% off our regular prices on a select range of our stock. Simply place an order and use the relevant coupon code “nswscale17” and the shipping method “Pick Up at NSW Scale Model Competition”. This deal ends at midnight on Thursday the 4th of May so be sure to get your orders in quickly.
It’s certainly shaping up to be a terrific event and we’re really looking forward to seeing everyone down there over the weekend. Be sure to check out the official IPMA website for more detailed information and all the terms and conditions.
